Fashion Week!

I know I’m a little late as Paris fashion week is just now about to wrap up but I had to write a note about my favorite trends from the runways, so I’m starting up with New York. As in past years, I watched fashion week from my couch, pulling up photos of the collections online. While unfortunately, I have not yet been able to witness the collections in person, I still find myself getting excited and feeling strangely disappointed when the week is over. But, my whining is of no consequence. I definitely found tons of things that I would wear, things that inspired me, and things that I wouldn’t personally wear, but that were stunning to look at nonetheless.

One of my favorites of the week was Abaete. I love the flirty and playful aesthetic of the look. I also really love the pairing of a dressier skirt with a simple tee-shirt. The juxtaposition of the casual with the dressy is great. It makes the outfit more interesting.

Another designer that excited me was Derek Lam. I’ve been a big fan of his for a while now, and he definitely did not disappoint. Some of my favorites include a white, beautifully draped knee length dress, a strapless number with knotted bows on the bodice, and my new guilty pleasure, the sparkly dress. It’s kinda Studio 54, but I love it. It’s so fun and with this particular dress I really love the combination of the gold and black.

As far as gowns are concerned, my hands down favorite of the week was definitely J. Mendel. Mendel showed a gown in a few variations that I thought was absolutely stunning. The first was a lovely blue v-neck dress cinched at the waist with a big black bow, followed by a gorgeous plum, one shoulder gown, and a black v-neck gown with bow detailing on both shoulders (which was by far my favorite).

Other gowns that I loved include this long sleeved, red, Victoria Beckham number...

and this Carlos Miele one.

Speaking of Carlos Miele, I was absolutely in love with this dress as well. I love the rouching, and the detail on the shoulder.

One trend I’m loving right now is ruffles, and I am a big fan of the way Alice Temperly did them this year. Again, these ruffles may be a bit extreme, but they’re SO pretty….

There were lots of prints on the runway again this season. Some of my favorite printed ensembles of the week include this Tibi maxi dress.

I also loved this Tory Burch floral dress...

and this Matthew Williamson piece...

and lastly, this print from Nicole Miller.

Now, I have to end this post with this fantastic Halston dress. I know this collection didn’t get the best reviews, but I absolutely was in love with this piece. It’s sexy, but not too much so, and drapes beautifully.

There were tons of other pieces that I loved, but time doesn’t permit me to get to all of my favorites in one post. Next on the list: Milan fashion week. Stay tuned….

How to Wear the Boyfriend Look Without Looking Like Your Boyfriend

One of my favorite new trends is the boyfriend look. It’s so fun, funky, and quirky and can look really cute if worn correctly. Now, while I absolutely adore the trend, I still want to make sure that I look like a girl. So the dilemma then becomes how to wear this look while still looking sexy and feminine. The important thing to remember is that in order for this look to work, you must mix the look with other pieces and most importantly, be sure not to overdo it with the oversized, masculine pieces. It’s all about balance.

Sexy boyfriend: This one’s easy. One option is to wear your vest or jacket without a top underneath to show a little bit of sexy cleavage. Another simple way to wear this look is to pair an oxford tee with a sexy skirt and heels. Third option: In my opinion there’s nothing better than looking effortlessly sexy. By pairing a simple men’s button up tee with a pair of shorts you almost give the illusion that you rolled out of bed and threw on your boyfriend’s shirt and ran out of the house looking fabulous.

Boyfriend in Heels:
Heels easily make any look feminine. Again, this is a simple way to make your boyfriend look more chic (see picture below). I also want to stress to those that are a little wary of the boyfriend jean trend that it is perfectly okay to wear the jeans with heels. It’ll make your look more feminine and maybe easier to wear at first if you pair your jeans with heels and a fitted top so that the look isn’t uber baggy.

Schoolgirl Boyfriend:
The school girl look is another hot trend that can be sexy in and of itself and works great for mixing in the boyfriend look. The first look simply mixes a long boyfriend cardigan with a plaid skirt. The second look takes the school girl look pretty literally. That being so, we can still take inspiration from it. One great detail on the jacket is the crest which gives the outfit an immediate schoolgirl vibe. Paired with the short skirt and knee socks the look definitely reads sexy schoolgirl.

Romantic Boyfriend:
Try mixing one piece with something romantic and super feminine like these gorgeous floral Diane Von Furstenburg dresses. Worn simply with a boyfriend cardigan, the look is clearly romantic but still posesses cool aesthetic with the juxtaposition of the masculine and feminine pieces.

Girlfriend: A super easy way to wear this look is to get pieces that are menswear inspired but are feminine at the same time. This satin Abaete suit has a very feminine cut and the material in and of itself gives the suit an inherently feminine mood. The Diane von Furstenburg vest has great floral detail just on the back, and my absolute favorite, this sweater vest is worn like a dress or can be worn over a dress and belted for a super creative feminine look!

Easy Boyfriend:
If all of this is too much for you, don’t worry about it. It’s not necessary to put too much time and thought into it if that’s not what you want to do. Just remember, if you want to wear a baggy piece, either wear heels with it, or only wear one baggy piece. The same thing goes for men’s jackets, oxfords, hats, vests etc. Just don’t overdo it. Here are some examples of how you can still rock the boyfriend trend in a simpler way.

The most important thing to remember is to wear your look with confidence. That’s the sexiest accessory of all!
